There are also Internet kiosks, Internet access points in public places like public libraries, airport halls, sometimes just for brief use while standing. Many hotels, resorts, and cruise ships offer Internet access for the convenience of their guests; this can take various forms, such as in-room wireless access, or a web browser that uses the in-room television set for its display (usually in his case the hotel provides a wireless keyboard on the assumption that the guest will use it from the bed), or computer(s) that guests can use, either in the lobby or in a business center. As with telephone service, in the US most mid-price hotels offer Internet access from a computer in the lobby to registered guests without charging an additional fee, while fancier hotels are more likely to charge for the use of a computer in their â€Å"business center. For those traveling by road in North America, many truck stops have Internet kiosks, for which a typical charge is around 20 cents per minute. Internet cafes come in a wide range of styles, reflecting their location, main clientele, and sometimes, the social agenda of the proprietors. In the early days they were important in projecting the image of the Internet as a ‘cool' phenomena. Building up an internet cafe seems so easy from outside. It feels as if one just needs to pull some chairs and tables, few computers and an internet networking system, and here goes the flourishing business. ?Legislation regulating home based child carer’s and the role of Ofsted the regulatory body All people working with children are governed by legislation that is in place to protect your children and the child care provider. In this document I have listed four important legislations that are of particular importance to home based child care providers and noted how I aim to incorporate them into my practice. Child care practitioners also have a regulatory body; in England it is Ofsted. This document gives you a brief description of their supervisory role in child care settings. However, the list of legislation is not comprehensive and nor is the short description of Ofsted’s Role, if you would like more information or would like to discuss anything written in this leaflet, please ask and I would be happy to provide you as a parent with more details. Children’s Act 1989 & 2004 The first time Children’s rights were recognised under UK Law was in the Children’s Act 1989, which summarised, means ‘the needs of the child are paramount’ (Riddall-Leech 2010 p18). Later, in 2004, the Every Child Matters agenda was born. This is the primary legislative Act that all childcare practitioners must observe. It outlines five conclusions that all children should meet. These are – Be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being. My childcare practice is committed to achieving all the outcomes of the every child matters charter by: – Be healthy By serving homemade healthy balanced meals and snacks. Providing daily opportunities for physical activity both indoors and outside. Ensuring a smoke free environment. Stay safe Everyone who frequently visits the setting including myself and my assistant have enhanced disclosures. There is a zero tolerance of bullying and all children are helped to understand their behaviour if they cause upset or bullying to another child. It requires all child care provider’s to register with Ofsted, the regulating body and that all children up to the age of 5 in child care learn and develop well using the Statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. By using carefully planned monthly topics and activity schemes it will ensure that all adult led and some of the child led play meets the various learning and development goals of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Through observation, both planned and spontaneous, the monthly planned schemes will be tailored to your child’s individual needs and ensure that they are developing to the best of their potential. The learning plans are always available for you to view and you will be able to view your child’s achievements in their ‘Unique Story’ book which will include all observations, examples and photos of their work and anything else your child would like to put in there for you to see. There will also be space for you to write and comment. This act has replaced all previous dicrimation laws and combined them into one Act to protect people from discrimation. Discrimation can come in many forms including religion, beliefs or the lack of either, age, race, disability, nationality and the list goes on. This law proctects people from prejudice and allows legal action to be taken against any person or company who is proven to have unfairly treated any of the protected groups covered by this Act. Everyone is welcome at my childcare service and we strive to ensure that the children learn about the importance of inclusion and the acceptance of others. I try to explain that in many cases it can just be fear of not knowing or understanding but this makes for a fantasic learning experience to discuss and learn about other peoples religions, cultures and so forth and that differences are good. Any information held will be password protected on a computer which has a firewall, Anti-virus software, mal-ware and spy-ware protection, all of which are kept up to date at all times. Your information will never be shared with anyone without your explicit consent, unless it is felt that there was a child protection issue. Any paper documentation is shredded if it is no longer required and we are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office who is the Regulatory Authority. The Home Based Child Carers Regulatory Body Here in England, home-based child carers are regulated and controlled by Ofsted who have four main processes. These processes are in place to ensure that the prospective child care practitioner meets and maintains all the requirements of a suitable carer including understanding and providing learning and development as required by the Statutory Framework in the Early Years Foundation Stage document. They also make sure that the welfare of the children can be met and are continuing to be met after registration. It begins with the process of registering with Ofsted who ensure that the potential carer and any other adult living or working with the practitioner have suitable disclosure checks and are healthy enough to care for children. The carer must also complete the prescribed training including First Aid. Once the carer has been registered, Ofsted make regular checks in the form of inspections to ensure that the setting is being maintained to the required standard, that the carer is continuing to sustain the right environment for the children to learn and develop whilst being kept safe and cared for. The inspector will write a report and grade the child-minder based upon his or her observations during the inspection. These reports should then be made available to parents and are published on the Ofsted website. If a complaint or a concern is made, it is Ofsted’s role to investigate the practitioner and their setting to ensure that they are fulfilling all their safeguarding and welfare demands, regardless and in addition to any inspection that has been carried out. If the investigation shows that the setting is failing in their requirements it is down to Ofsted to enforce changes or to take action against the child carer and the setting. The title of the poem ‘Out, out’ is an allusion to William Shakespeares tragedy Macbeth, in the play Macbeth is shocked to hear of his wifes death and comments on the brevity of life in the quote ‘out, out brief candle’. It refers to how unpredictable and fragile life can be. This title itself also relates to the narrative as the poem is also about how unpredictable and fragile life is. The theme of loss is communicated in ‘Out, out’ with the constant use of personification, an example of this would be the personification of the Buzz Saw which constantly buzzes and snarls while jumping out of the boy’s hand in ‘excitement’. The line: â€Å"leaped out at the boy’s hand, or seemed to leap† as well as the word ‘excitement’ to describe the saw helps to create an image in the readers mind through personification that the saw has a mind of its own. This is uses later on to help display the theme of loss l ater on in the narrative. The poem is penned in blank verse with deviations from iambic pentameter to create a rhythm for when you read the poem, this helps to create tension to help display loss and tension as the narrative goes on. Robert Frost initially starts poem with mentioning the tragic event to come when he states that he wished that the workers would have â€Å"called it a day† and â€Å"given† the boy â€Å"the half hour that counts so much when saved from work†, this leads the reader to wonder what will happen as there is foreshadowing for a unknown event. This eventually leads to the sense of loss when the boy nearly severs his hand. After the boy’s hand is nearly severed, he is still mature and old enough to realize that he has lost too much blood to survive. The boy is shown to desperately attempt to â€Å"keep the life from spilling† from his hand, but even that is only an attempt, since nothing can be done and everybody including t he boy knows he will die soon. Above all, though, the boy hopes to maintain his physical dignity in his death and would rather die with a hand than die with a missing hand, this helps to shows the theme of loss when the boy dies. Robert Frost also shows the theme of loss when he writes: â€Å"the watcher at his pulse took fright†¦.† this use of imagery shows that maybe an acquaintance and not a family member who is with the boy when he dies. This scene is a cold image and shows a lack of humanity to help demonstrate the theme of loss as the boy is shown to be without much family when he dies. Near the end of the poem the narrator says ‘Little—less—nothing’, this is an example of diminishing words and the caesura used creates a pause to put emphasis on what has just been said. The theme of loss is communicated here because it shows that the boy is weak and that he has nothing because his life has been taken away from him. To communicate the them e of loss at the end of the poem Robert Frost writes that the workers: ‘And they, since they were not the one dead, turned to their affairs’, this shows that the family did not feel much emotion when the boy died and instead just carried on with their work without the boy. Onomatopoeia is also prominent throughout the poem as it helps highlight the extended personification, an example of this would be: ‘And the saw snarled and rattled, snarled and rattled’, this helps build up tension for when the boy loses his hand to help further communicate the theme of loss. In the two poems â€Å"Out, Out† by Robert Frost and â€Å"Disabled† by Wilfred Owen, a similar theme of loss is portrayed. Both of these poems deal with the subject of physical loss, as both protagonists of these poems experience amputation which are also both accidental, in the case of ‘Disabled’ the loss of the man’s legs and the loss of a hand in ‘Out, out’. Both Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen have managed to captivate their audience’s attention, and also a certain degree of sympathy for the protagonists’ misfortune in ‘Disabled’ and ‘Out, out’. This seemingly unnecessary amount of duplicates has led to further research, revealing that these ‘extra’ genes cannot successfully code for proteins (Proudfoot, 1980). These genes were therefore labeled as functionless sequences of DNA, and aptly named pseudogenes. This discovery poses many questions regarding the role and origin of these supposedly non-functional genes, but most importantly what else can we learn from them? Unfortunately, DNA that cannot be expressed into proteins is useless in regards to investigations of the molecular clock (Martin, 1990), however further research proves that we can learn a lot from pseudogenes. In order to explore what we can learn from pseudogenes, we need to understand them. Firstly, there are two main types of pseudogene, processed and unprocessed. Processed pseudogenes, also known as retropseudogenes, are sequences of transposable DNA that have been reverse transcribed back from mRNA, but have somehow failed to replicate crucial protein coding elements when assimilated back into the genome (Graur and Li, 2000: Skalka and Goff, 1993). Unprocessed pseudogenes can occur by simple replication of a pre-existing pseudogene, or due to adverse point mutations in ‘normal’ functioning genes that can trigger a frame shift in the original protein code. This frame shift can for example, lead to a mixture of premature stop codons and elimination of splicing sites, rendering the gene faulty (Li, Graur and Shuali, 1989). Case – 1 Hostile Mint it’s probably the last place you might expect to find a hostile work environment. First of all, it’s a federal workplace. Mint in Denver was anything but a safe place for 71 women who brought a complaint to the facility’s equal employment opportunity (EEO) officer in 2003. When the organizers of the complaint began to fear that they were the investigation targets instead of the complaints, 32 of the women decided to take the matter to the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Their contention: The Denver Mint was a hostile work environment. These allegations were the culmination of a number of incidents that had occurred over a long period of time. The Denver Mint, which opened in 1863, has 414 employees, of which 93 are women. One woman who started working at the Denver Mint in 1997 said, â€Å"She found the atmosphere completely hostile toward females. † When she filed an EEO charge claiming discrimination, she was retaliated against by having most of her job duties reassigned and being required to work at home. Events leading to the current complaint started in 2001, when another female employee who was inspecting a men’s room for cleanliness saw a loose ceiling tile, removed it, and found 40 to 50 sex magazines. Some months later, this same employee was checking for rats in an attic and found a stash of pornographic magazines. Both times she made these discoveries, she was with a male colleague. Later, she would say in a statement given to the main office of the U. S. Mint that to her knowledge no action was every taken to address the situations. Another female employee filed a claim of retaliation and sexual harassment with the facility’s EEO officer in 2000. It was 2003 before she got a hearing with the EEOC and an administrative judge ruled in favor of the Mint. However, when she filed her claims in federal court in 2005, a jury found that she â€Å"worked in an environment hostile to women and awarded her $80,000. † In 2001, the facility’s new superintendent held a women’s forum attended by the then-director of the U. S. Mint. However, the highest-ranking woman at the Denver Mint—the administrative services chief, Beverly Mandigo Milne—said, â€Å"Nothing changed. † The final straw that triggered the complaint was the demotion of the mint’s acting EEO manager in February 2003. The month after the demotion, the 71 women filed the petition alleging a hostile work environment. An individual from the San Francisco Mint was assigned to investigate; however, the women claimed that the investigation never focused on the facts, but on Milne. One of the women said, â€Å"They believed that Beverly coerced everyone into filing the petition. † That was when 32 of the women took the matter to the EEOC. Despite the filed petition, hostile situations still continued. One woman said that in 2004, a male co-worker offered to pay her for sex. Another woman said that after she returned after a short bereavement leave following her husband’s death in 2005, a male supervisor propositioned her. On March 31, 2006, the U. S. Childhood obesity can lead to health issues if action is not taken rapidly. This paper will provide a brief summary of the issues of childhood obesity and focus on the role the school lunch meals play on this growing crisis. An easier way to understand obesity is the individual is taking in more calories than is being used.
